Steve Scavuzzo and Christy Davis had put an ad out in the Village Voice looking for a guitarist for MOLD, which had just released their second record Reject after receiving a decent amount of college radio attention for their first EP "Sonic Youth at DisneyWorld." Their first guitar player Phil Toshi had moved his family to Hawaii when he inherited a house there and went on to write the book Zen Guitar.

Steve, Christy and I hit it off, which launched a musical partnership that has lasted 16 years and continues with our current project Gatos de Sensei. MOLD started out playing very deconstructionist punk pop in the Pixies vein. Steve sang some songs and played rhythm guitar. Christy both sang and played drums. Chris Adam played bass and I played lead guitar. The first three Mold records (of which I played on the 3rd, self-titled full length album MOLD) were released on Funky Mushroom, a small indie NYC label that also had God Is My Copilot. The label garnered us some college radio airplay and gave us just enough juice to be able to book some out of town shows and a festival here and there. Our NYC shows were generally packed.

As the band progressed, we started writing more complex material which eventually created a friction with bassist Chris Adam who preferred the punk pop style. You can see the split in directions on the 3 song 1997 demo between the songs Cara Lee and Itch. Eventually we decided to part ways with Chris. We found bassist Alan Levine who was excited about exploring a more art rock direction resulting in the full length record Honey Lava.

Sadly the record was poorly recorded and mixed. I've always wanted to remix that record but the 2-inch 24 track tapes were lost when the studio that was holding them shut down. Not being able to give that record the mixes and mastering that it deserves is one of my more bitter experiences in music. On a positive note, it lead me to pursue building my own home studio and getting into recording and production.

Our final 3 song demo recorded in 2000 is some of our best, bringing back some of the power of early mold, but married with the complexity of the Honey Lava material. The songs End of the Line and Time to Go seem a bit sad in hindsight, basically prophesying the last days of Mold as a band. A friend tracked it in his basement and we mixed it together as a band.

I have always felt that MOLD's one major flaw was doing the right thing at the wrong time......we missed being part of the wave of deconstructionist 4AD bands by a few years, and then got into the art rock stuff a bit before it really started catching on. If our Alan hadn't moved to North Carolina in 2000 or if we hadn't got so frustrated trying to find a replacement for him, who knows where we would be now.

But we did get frustrated and after 7+ years of working our asses off making great music, we threw in the towel. We should do a full Mold retrospective at some point...the band released 3 full length albums, several EPs, played several festivals including opening up for Throwing Muses, and had a devoted local following packing our headlining weekend slots at Luna Lounge, Arlene's, and Mercury Lounge. What's included here is just a small sampling but are some of my favorites.
